Environment Input and Investment

Attaching great importance to the input and investment in environmental protection, the company allocates special fund for science and technology to rebuild the environmental protection facilities and equipment of vessels, establishes a special budget for system construction and environment evaluation to hold environment knowledge training and environment evaluation, and allocates special fund for participation in the Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) and Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG). In 2008, the company devoted RMB 49.34 million for science and technology development. The company pays much attention to the impacts of the international conventions related to environmental protection on new ship design and construction. The container vessels newly ordered in 2008 all meet the fuel oil tank protection rules and Performance Standard for Protective Coatings for Dedicated seawater ballast tanks in all types of ships and double-side skin spaces of bulk carriers(PSPC)for vessels to be delivered after July 1st 2012, thus the service life of protective coatings of ballast tanks can be prolonged to 15 years and the impacts of ballast tank corrosion on vessel security and environmental pollution can be greatly reduced. Therefore, the overall costs for new ship dramatically increase by more than USD 20 million than the same type of ships falling short of convention requirements.
