Challenges from Energy |
The resources of petroleum belong to all the human beings. It cannot be regenerated and it cannot afford any waste. With the annual increase of shipping capacity, the consumption of fuel on ships is increasing. COSCON is one of the major consumers of petroleum with an annual consumption more than 2000,000 tons. To decrease the unit fuel consumption amount annually, the Company puts into use the new generation of container vessels to maximize the carrying capacity, optimizes the route system to reach the best speed and reduce the mileage of a ship, and adopts the latest technology to control the fuel consumption.
Challenges from Emission |
The emission of greenhouse gases is believed to be one of the reasons for global warming. The emission goes up side by side with oil consumption. Reducing oil consumption unrelentingly is our basic means to control the emission. Our company uses low-sulfur fuel to reduce the emission of sulfur oxides (SOx). The reefer containers install the cooling unit without fluorine.
Challenges from Pollution |
Preventing pollution is always one of our concerns. We strictly conform to the relative international and domestic laws and regulations to prevent any serious pollution accident. We have stopped using TBT (Tributylzinn) painting. The “Ships Ballast Water Management Plan” is implemented to stop the spread of microorganisms. The “Ships Garbage Management Plan” is also carried out to prevent the poisonous and harmful garbage from polluting the sea.
Challenges from Material |
The world’s resources are finite, so we are trying to recycle reusable resources. Our newly designed ships use the shipping building materials with the highest possible recyclability. We will make constant efforts to utilize other timber and materials as the floor materials for containers.
Challenges from Water Resources |
Water is precious, so we call for thrifty use of water. The sea water desalting system installed on all our ships can partly meet the fresh water demand for life and thus reduce the consumption of fresh water on ships.
Though the above measures may cause financial difficulty, add to the cost, and even exert some negative influence on the Company’s future profit, we still take active measures to confront the challenge from the changing climate to ensure the shipping safety, to decrease energy consumption, to reduce the discharge of greenhouse gases, to prevent pollution. With our efforts, the sea will be clearer and the sky will be bluer.
