Shipping industry is the basic industry of the national economy and international trade. With the globalization of today¡¯s economic development, shipping industry becomes the bridge for world trade and at the same time spurs the national and regional economic development as well.
COSCON is the key company specializing in container transport under COSCON Container Lines. COSCON provides container transport service to the global customers with intense confidence and sense of responsibility. As the No. 1 Chinese container lining company and the No. 6 globally, our development will, undoubtedly, exert great influence on economy, environment and society. This Report presents our practice and commitment to economy, environment and social responsibilities.
In 2007, COSCON sets up a new round of strategies (2008-2012). According to the new strategies, the shipping capacity of COSCON will reach 1 million TEUs by 2012, ranked No.1 in Asia. The Company will then join the first tier of lining companies in the world. Guided by this objective, we will hold hands with our global customers, partners, and all walks of the society to start on a brighter voyage and forge a ¡°win-win¡± co-operation.
However, energy and environment issues have so far become the biggest challenge confronting human beings. We are soberly aware that the growth of our company will inevitably bring about the increase of energy consumption and the emission of poisonous and greenhouse gas.
Building a resource-saving and environment-friendly society is the key requirement of the Scientific Outlook on Development promoted by the Chinese government, and the common responsibility of the whole society. Among them, energy saving and pollution reduction is of profound significance to the change of the pattern of China¡¯s economic growth and the comprehensive, coordinate and sustainable development of China¡¯s economic society.
We earnestly respond to the call of the Chinese government and have made energy saving and pollution reduction one of our moves to implement the scientific outlook on development. We proclaim that from 2008, the fleet average cruising speed will be slowed down by 10% to save energy and reduce emission by decreasing the rotate speed of the main engines. We will try our best to check the unit consumption, reduce oil consumption and gas emission, lighten our company¡¯s influence of development on environment by optimizing resource collocation, adopting new techniques, etc. With an attitude of highly responsible for the society, the environment, the history, and the public, we will persist in carrying out energy saving and pollution reduction in every link of the whole production and operation process. We will do our best to save energy and reduce pollution from the headstream, to protect ocean environment, and to construct a green home.
To take the road of sustainable development, it requires the joint efforts of every region, every country, and all the human beings. ¡°The way ahead is long; I see no ending, yet high and low I will search with my will unbending.¡± We wish to cooperate with all walks of the society to shoulder the social responsibilities, abide by the ten principles of the Global Compact, and strive for a bright future of the sustainable development.
